A tale of two chocolate cakes

Vegan chocolate cakes are like buses - you wait ages for one to come along, then two turn up in quick succession.

Oh alright, they're nothing like buses. Buses are big and red, and often smell like sick and are full of teenagers playing tinny music out of their phones (at least in South London they do). Vegan chocolate cakes are a variety of sizes, brown, and smell like heaven.

But you know what I mean, right?

The first chocolate cake that stumbled into my life was from the Heavenly Cake Company, which makes vegan and gluten free cakes.

After tweeting about how it would be nice to get a vegan cake sent to my office, a company arranged for just that to happen - and got a Heavenly Cake Company chocolate cake sent over.

The cake was made with spelt flour, rather than the traditional wheat. Obviously, it made a difference in taste, which I think put some of my coworkers off a bit (yes, I decided to share - I should get a medal for my good works, right?!) but I enjoyed the more complex, chewy taste.

I wouldn't have minded a double layer of icing - anyone who says it's not the best part of a cake is lying - but all in all a thumbs up. The cake was maHOOSive too, so kept us going for a good while in the office. What's better than free chocolate cake? Free chocolate cake that goes on forever, clearly!

The second chocolate cake to grace my palate was this beauty, from Whole Foods:

The biggest Whole Foods in the UK is Kensington. It's an area of London I don't go to often, but on my first trip to the Whole Foods there, I picked up a slice of their own-brand vegan chocolate cake.

Top marks to them for the inclusion of apricot jam in there - made me think of all the wonderful cakes you get in Mittel Europe. Also - icing in the middle and on top. Oh yes.

Only downside was the hard chocolate on the outside made the whole thing a bit tougher in texture then I would have liked, but when the taste was so spot on, it's not much to gripe about. I guess I'll be seeing a lot more of West London now...

  1. Holy crap, I think I'm going to try hard to manifest some free vegan chocolate cake into my life. ;) And I agree with your icing sentiments - load it on!

  2. How cool! I don't have a Twitter account, but it sounds like you lucked out with the generous delivery! Maybe I should sign up? :)

Would you believe I've not had a vegan cake? It's been a couple years since I left dairy and eggs in the dust, so why haven't I tried one yet?!

Both of these options look fantastic.

  4. Chocolate heaven! I'm not the world's biggest choco-freak but I'd take a slice of either. Personally, I've grown to love the flavor of spelt flour.

  5. Wow, you tweeted you wanted chocolate cake and one appeared? How cool! Next time try tweeting you want someone to give you a million pounds and see what happens. ;) Kensington is inconvenient for me too but you can't beat the massive Whole Foods (when I do go there, which is very rarely, I like to eat something at the Saf there).
