Vegan in Brighton: Where to get great vegan fish and chips by the seaside

Think of a day out the Brighton, and there are certain images that will pop into your mind: buckets and spades, a pebble one, sticks of rock and candy floss, 2p machines and arcades, windbreaks or sunburn depending your luck and the weather, and fish and chips are all quintessential parts of the English seaside experience.

But if you want to indulge in a traditional day besides the seaside, but you want to do it in a cruelty-free way, Brighton has your back. There are a number of places that offer delicious vegan alternatives to seafood - here are three of my favourites:

No Catch Co

No Catch serves some of the best chip-shop chips there are in Brighton, hands down. But if that's not enough to recommend them, then read on.

No Catch is a proper chippy, just vegan. They do vegan versions of cod, haddock, prawns, shrimp, calamari - you name it, they've got it.

What's more, they're great for non-fish chippy staples too: if you're ever in the mood for a vegan battered sausage, this is the place to come. The classic sides are all out in force too: get your curry sauce, mushy peas, or tartare sauce, safe in the knowledge it's all plant based.

No Catch is really near the seafront, but if you're thinking of taking your dinner out onto the beach, be warned - the seagulls in Brighton are brutal and they will aggressively try to take your food!

Earth and Stars
If you're in the mood for vegan fish and chips, but want to enjoy them away from the bustle of the seafront, then the Earth and Stars is a good choice.

It's a dinky little pub in the heart of Brighton's North Laine, with the sort of intimate, low-ceilinged vibe that you just want to curl up in when the weather is being less than kind.

It's an omni pub, but there are a handful of veggie and vegan options on the menu, including tofish and chips. (side note: I love tofish and chips so much, I think I could write poetry to it. 'Tofish and chips, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...)

The Earth and Stars does a really good job of its tofish and chips - a slab of smoked tofu lovingly battered, snuggled up next to some delightfully crispy chips. And bonus points for the high quality supporting acts - those peas were so good and the vegan tartare was properly made. And look at that grilled lemon - extra fancy points right there!

Athena B

Athena B is a bit outside of Brighton, in its nearby more staid cousin of Hove.

It's a proper chip shop, dishing out all the usual chippy fare. It also has a small-but-perfectly formed vegan menu, however, including my true love, tofish and chips (shall I compare it to a summer's day? It is more lovely and more temperate etc etc).

The tofish and chips looks something like this:

Athena B offers a hearty chunk of smoked tofu in traditional chip-shop battery, but takes it up a notch with a miso and lemon marinade and a nori skin, all alongside those classic chippy chips.

If that's not your thing, there are other options, including smoked tofu fishcake or vegan battered sausages. There's vegan tartare sauce too (there it is, in the picture!) but I wasn't blown away by it, so maybe just stick to the deep fried goodness.
